Section Involvement Grant Application

The American Medical Association is proud to support local initiatives through its medical student leaders. The Section Involvement Grant (SIG) program is available to all medical schools to assist local AMA medical school section recruitment and engagement efforts throughout the school year. Local AMA sections are eligible to receive up to $1,500 per academic year (maximum $500 per application).

For recruitment events, all non-member attendees should be emailed an invitation to join the AMA within 48 hours of the event. To support recruitment efforts, the MSOP team has worked to automate the membership email process. Outreach Leaders should:
- use the MSOP dashboard to download an excel registration template
- collect registrations in the template
- within 48 hours of the event, upload the attendee list and invite all non-members using the automated email in the dashboard.
After submitting your Section Involvement Grant application, please set up a time to connect with your Student Outreach Manager. They will discuss best practices and key processes with you, and can answer questions you may have.

Local AMA sections are eligible to receive up to $1,500 per academic year (maximum $500 per application).

For recruitment events, students should send AMA membership invitations to all non-member attendees within 48 hours using the automated email in the MSOP dashboard. Outreach Leaders should use the MSOP dashboard to download the registration template, collect attendee data, and upload the list promptly.

After submitting your SIG application, schedule a meeting with your Student Outreach Manager to review best practices and processes:

The deadline to submit SIG applications for the 2026 Medical Student Advocacy Conference (MAC) is Thursday, January 15, 2026. Applications for MAC submitted after the deadline will not be reviewed.
Before submitting a grant request, please be sure to review the details on the Section Involvement Grant (SIG) website, as well as the AMA Code of Conduct for in-person and digital events.
Please note: Students should submit grant applications six to eight weeks prior to their activity date. Applications are currently being reviewed for events taking place in January 2026 and beyond.

Describe the follow up with attendees, specifically non-members, from this event. Please be sure to track attendees with a sign-in sheet, as that is needed in the Recap. Outreach Leaders should log into the MSOP dashboard and use the excel template in the dashboard for registrations. Within 48 hours of hosting a recruitment event, Outreach Leaders can upload the registration list to the dashboard and use the "invite members" feature to automatically invite non-members. The AMA pays out an approved grant via check made payable to the school you attend. Checks are made payable directly to the student’s medical school section using the naming convention “SCHOOL NAME AMA-MSS.” For the field below “Bank Account Name” field, please confirm the naming convention for your school: For example, Medical College of Wisconsin may be “Med Coll of Wisconsin – AMA-MSS. " If your bank account does not follow this naming convention please provide the information below and contact studentops@ama-assn.org. Checks cannot be made payable to individuals. If you are not sure of the name on your bank account, please contact studentops@ama-assn.org and we can confirm the last bank account name that was used and if the check was cashed or not.

If awarded a Section Involvement Grant, do you agree to provide a recap with a typed (Excel document) attendee sign-up sheet with full names and email addresses, and a minimum of 2 photos from the event?
