  • Standing Committees are appointed by the Resident & Fellow Section Governing Council (GC) and assist them in furthering the mission of the Section.

    The committees seek to increase resident and fellow involvement with the Section, promote RFS position statements, and carry out projects specific to their area of expertise. The RFS GC will determine which committees will be established based on the strategic objectives and goals. The term for a Standing Committee member is one year. Committees are expected to meet approximately every 4-6 weeks, with the Chairs and Vice Chairs meeting with GC leadership approximately every 4 weeks. The committee chairs are encouraged to work with other committees, if applicable, and with members of the GC, specifically the Vice Chair.

     Committee Member Responsibilities:

    • Attend meetings as scheduled by the committee Chair and Vice Chair
    • Carry out the work of the committee as defined by the Chair and Vice Chair
    • Maintain active engagement in the committee throughout the length of the term

    Committee on Business and Economics (CBE)
    This committee addresses financial and economic issues affecting physicians during their residency and fellowship, such as disability insurance, debt management, budgeting, negotiating employment contracts and choosing a practice. Committee members represent the resident and fellow voice in respect to the future of physician payment models, employment models, medical school and training debt, and macroeconomic trends that may face health care in the future. Additionally, the committee works to engage the Section in financial literacy education and its impact on residents and fellows.

     

    Committee on Legislation and Advocacy (COLA)
    This committee assists in enhancing grassroots legislative efforts and educating the RFS on current political issues impacting medicine. This committee educates residents and fellows on pertinent health policy topics and collaborates with the AMA Political Action Committee Resident Representative and the Council on Legislation Resident Representative when applicable. Additionally, this committee authors reports and resolutions on various health policy topics.

     

    Committee on Long-Range Planning (CLRP)
    This committee works on issues regarding the structure and future of the Resident and Fellow Section. Committee members assist the Governing Council in writing reports, reviewing the Internal Operating Procedures (IOPs), and maintaining the Leadership Handbook.

     

    Committee on Medical Education (CME)
    This committee works on Graduate Medical Education issues, and assists the Governing Council in developing policy positions, writing reports and educating AMA resident and fellow members about critical Graduate Medical Education issues.

     

     

    Committee on Public Health (CPH)
    This committee works to address issues affecting public health both domestically and internationally. Committee members assist the Governing Council in developing policy positions, writing reports, and educating resident and fellow members about critical public health issues.
     

     

    Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI)
    This committee is dedicated to strengthening our Resident-Fellow Section through the promotion of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Committee efforts are aligned with the strategic plan of the AMA-RFS. The committee aims to build justice and equity into our policy, advocacy, and business, and to ensure that the full diversity of resident and fellow membership is represented, welcome, and supported as members and in leadership. Committee members also work with the governing council and other stakeholders to create educational programing and policy.

     

    Ad-hoc Committee on RFS Position Compendium 

    This committee will be responsible for a broad review and reorganization of the RFS Position Compendium (formerly Digest of Actions), including ensuring compliance with recently passed resolutions such as making editorial changes to outdated and stigmatizing language. The Committee will work with the Governing Council to produce a report summarizing its work.

     

    Ad-Hoc Committee on RFS Internal Operating Procedures Revisions 

    This committee will be responsible for reviewing and revising the AMA-RFS Internal Operating Procedures and is charged with submitting a progress report to the RFS Governing Council to be presented at Interim 2025 regarding rank choice voting. In addition, the committee will be responsible for completing a draft of all proposed Internal Operating Procedures revisions by Annual meeting 2026.
