  • About the Advisory Committee

  • The AMA Advisory Committee on American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN Affairs) provides guidance to the AMA Board of Trustees and AMA management on policy and advocacy initiatives impacting AI/AN medical students, physicians, and patients, while also contributing to broader AMA efforts aimed at improving health outcomes for this population.

     

    Time commitment

    The Advisory Committee meets in person up to three times each year:

    • June 2026 (Chicago), in conjunction with the AMA Annual Meeting
    • August 2026 (Chicago)
    • November 2026 (Orlando), in conjunction with the AMA Interim Meeting

    Additionally, the Advisory Committee meets virtually for one hour approximately every two months. All remaining business is handled via email communications, which typically require an additional 1-2 hours per month.

     

    Terms of service

    Terms of service vary by position. See position descriptions below.

    Available positions include:

    • One medical student member (one-year term)
    • One resident or fellow member (one-year term)
    • One young physician member (under age 40 or within the first eight years of practice; two-year term)
    • Three physician members at-large (may not be medical students, residents, or fellows; two two-year terms and one three-year term for inaugural Advisory Committee)
    • One physician representative of the Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP), nominated by AAIP (may not be a medical student, resident, or fellow; three-year term for inaugural Advisory Committee)

     

    Applications for all positions except the AAIP representative position are due February 28, 2026. Individuals seeking nomination for the AAIP representative position should inquire directly with AAIP.
