In addition to their role in providing patient care, academic physicians are the nation’s custodians of medical education and advance medical science through research, teaching, and administration.
Academic physicians include faculty at academic medical centers and educators within community-based hospitals and clinics. They include those with responsibilities in UME, GME or CME and physicians engaged in research.
They have a key role in the professional identity formation of the next generation of physicians through mentorship and role modeling and promote equity, diversity, and belonging (EDB) throughout all work. As educators of health professionals in disciplines allied to medicine, and as practitioners themselves, academic physicians also have a stake in scope of practice concerns.
